absurd decision on Obama makes a mockery of the Nobel peace prize

Michael Binyon – UK Times Online

The award of this year’s Nobel peace prize to President Obama will be met with widespread incredulity, consternation in many capitals and probably deep embarrassment by the President himself.

Rarely has an award had such an obvious political and partisan intent. It was clearly seen by the Norwegian Nobel committee as a way of expressing European gratitude for an end to the Bush Administration, approval for the election of America’s first black president and hope that Washington will honour its promise to re-engage with the world.

Instead, the prize risks looking preposterous in its claims, patronising in its intentions and demeaning in its attempt to build up a man who has barely begun his period in office, let alone achieved any tangible outcome for peace.

The pretext for the prize was Mr Obama’s decision to “strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples”. Many people will point out that, while the President has indeed promised to “reset” relations with Russia and offer a fresh start to relations with the Muslim world, there is little so far to show for his fine words.  Full Article

My thing about this peace prize is this: WORDS V. DEEDS. What has he done, really, to promote peace? He has certainly done a lot to embrace our enemies and offend our allies. Who really thinks this will bring peace to the United States? And in the world, he has used a lot of wonderful rhetoric, but what actions have we seen? What accomplishments? Nada. Afghanistan is falling apart and he won’t make a decision, we’re sending Taliban leaders back to plot against us from Guantanamo Bay, Iran is nuclear-capable, Israel is without an ally and on the verge of war, the Russians and the Chinese are coming together, our debt to the Chinese alone could ruin the future for our children, not to mention Chavez and the craziness of South America and Cuba working together against us. If the United States is devastated financially, militarily and/or politically, what other country will mourn, besides crying that we won’t be buying their goods? So it is in the interest of anyone who wishes ill for the United States to grant this award to Obama. Keep it up, big guy, the world is your oyster.
